Description

This favorite rides just east and north of the Pleiades cluster (M45).  This "eaglet" is actually standing on its head, as we look up at it from planet Earth.  I've rotated this image CW by 90 degrees so the eaglet is "posed" better.  Here, north is right and east is up.

I took care to color calibrate with the SPCC process in PixInsight, so colors should be "natural", even though they are saturated and stretched to brighten the interstellar material that makes up this object.  No emissions are occurring here.  What we see is reflection from all surrounding starlight, so this type of object is referred to as an Integrated Flux Nebula (IFN) by serious astronomers.  I personally prefer the layman's term of Galactic Cirrus.  There are several small galaxies to be found in the background.

I know "Baby Eagle" is an endearing moniker, but doesn't this look more like a praying mantis?
